Spirit Drum & Bugle Corps is the premier program of Spirit Performing Arts Inc. Originally founded in 1991 as the City of Newark Marching 100 and later renamed to Spirit of Newark/NJ. Today Spirit is the last of the remaining Northern NJ/NYC metro area junior drum corps. After a small hiatus before the 2012 season due to the death of former Executive Director Glenn Eng, the organization today is now a program of Spirit Performing Arts Inc and a current Drum Corps International (DCI) SoundSport Division member organization with hopes to returning to Open Class in the near future.
WHAT IS DRUM CORPS?
Modern drum and bugle corps finds its origins in the post-World War I era. Impressed by the precision and pageantry of American military and parade units, parents launched drum corps in their own communities so their children could benefit from rigorous instruction and discipline. Drum corps has grown steadily since the 1930s, finding sponsorship and support in groups like the VFW and the Catholic Youth Organization.
Since the formation of Drum Corps International (DCI) in 1972, the sophistication of creative and artistic skills in drum and bugle corps has increased tremendously. The activity has developed to a level which is now considered to be a contemporary art form, while the organizational efforts of DCI have elevated the status of the activity to its current position as the second largest youth program in the United States.
WHO IS SPIRIT?
Spirit is the last of the inner-city Drum Corps organizations in the NY/Northern NJ Metropolitan area and one of the only remaining in the United States. Since our founding, we have served over 1400 inner city at risk youth from the Greater Newark area introducing them to the marching arts on the highest of levels. At our peak we have traveled coast to coast amassing over 8,000 miles over 8-10 competitions against the world’s best marching ensembles. The “Commitment to Excellence” and allowing our students to “Catch the Spirit” while being “Newark’s Musical Ambassadors” is who we are..
Spirit Performing Arts Inc incorporated in the State of New Jersey and is registered with the United States Internal Revenue Service as a 501(c)3 Not-for-Profit Corporation, governed by a Board of Directors.
Spirit Performing Arts consistently commits to developing the lives of today’s youth through the educational and artistic excellence, while creating paths of success through the creative and performing arts. Creative and performing arts allows for the youth to build self-esteem by connecting a universal language which everyone can relate. These activities allow for the building of one’s character and overall the type of citizen they become.
WHAT IS IT LIKE TO BE A MEMBER?
Our program season runs from late October/early November with a series of audition camps and experience weekends which increase in frequency throughout the winter into the spring. During audition camps and member experience weekends, members stay at the rehearsal site; all meals are provided by the drum corps.
After the end of the school year, members rehearse daily for several weeks of intensive training. In late June/early July is when competition season begins. Throughout the summer competition season the corps will be scheduled to perform upwards of 5-6 times; and if approved for Open Class competition, a 2-3 week tour can take place culminating in mid-August at Drum Corps International World Championships.
WHO CAN BE A MEMBER?
Membership is a privilege afforded to all interested in working hard to become their very best. Our membership includes young men and women beginning at age 13 up to and including age 21. Most members have experience in high school marching bands, and some may have experience as members of other drum and bugle corps. We recommend that you attend camps as often as possible in order to guarantee your membership in the drum corps.
